<br />
The only problem was I couldn't figure out what to get, the site is really impressive and they showcase designers from all over the world. After much deliberation, asking my friends, etc., I finally narrowed it down to this dagger piece from <a href="http://boticca.com/leivankash/">LeiVanKash</a> (<a href="http://boticca.com/leivankash/collection/damocles/#pieces">from the "Damocles" Collection</a>). It had the perfect balance of elegance and bad-ass-ery that I was looking for, and I wear rings all the time, so it won't end up sitting on my dresser in the necklace and bracelet graveyard....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVgurgW7PHeHNSXzCXC672Setq0dlF7mcG0O8oxKyJ5GG_zBQ7NG6d9GTZpGTDVY7ura2kNHkyQHVLZ6SShBAQLTNxCiSTTxklhrKUUN3Pk2POFq5Vb_YTRYYVjp_X0_53kWiU7ZOdcgw/s1600/image_4.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVgurgW7PHeHNSXzCXC672Setq0dlF7mcG0O8oxKyJ5GG_zBQ7NG6d9GTZpGTDVY7ura2kNHkyQHVLZ6SShBAQLTNxCiSTTxklhrKUUN3Pk2POFq5Vb_YTRYYVjp_X0_53kWiU7ZOdcgw/s1600/image_4.jpeg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I decided to style it with some equally elegant/badass tattoos from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/SpiritInk">Sprit Ink</a>...being afraid of going under the needles, it's my only option. But I've actually received compliments on my faux ink before, and a waitress asked to photograph my sacred heart "tattoo" to show to her tattooist...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
And finally, the nail polish is "Ripley" from Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, which is perfectly described as a "blackened antique olive-gold metallic"...<br />

I really love this piece, and feel very lucky to own it. I feel like it's going to become a staple, it's such a nice extra touch. My hands are probably my favorite body part so I like to accessorize and pay a lot of attention to styling them...from nails to rings to body art. What do you think? Let me know and as always, thanks for reading<br />

Growing up with an awareness of the plants and animals around me, and an environmentally-conscious mom, I've always paid attention to the landscape and our impact on it.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I've been noticing a ton of "invasive species" lately where I live, non-native plants are taking over the landscape, choking out the native wildflowers. The Japanese knotweed in my yard is terrible. Chemicals are the only sure fire way to get rid of it, and since it's very close to the water, I am hesitant to do so. A tough, resilient, bamboo-like plant, I keep cutting it down, but it keeps growing back. <a href="http://rentagoat.com/">I've been thinking about hiring a herd of goats to come in and mow it down</a>....<div>

French accessory designer, <a href="http://www.kobja.com/">Monika Jarosz</a>, also takes a similar approach with a highly poisonous invasive species of toad, introduced to Oceania from South America. A "non-protected species", animal advocates have recommended it be controlled and eliminated. The designer has recycled its skin into bags, bracelets, even belts...talk about a "conversation piece!"</div>

<div>
Wearing fur or using animal products for fashion has always been considered something of a taboo in the past. It caused the extinction or near-extinction of species, from beavers to birds, all for the sake of being fashionable and looking good.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It's interesting to me to see it now being used in the complete opposite of ways. It raises awareness of human impact on the ecosystem. It shows how we cause great damage and harm to native plants and animals by mistakenly introducing non-native species into the environment. What do you think of this new trend? Ready to wear it or completely against it? I'd be curious to know.</div>

What fascinates me was that this was a time of transition. Hippie-flower-child style was turning into black leather and combat boots, there was a real change in the culture at the time, reflected in music and fashion. <div>

Needless to say, I really identify with the fashion and personal style of the era. I like the in-your-face boldness of it, how it feels like personal armor, the rebelliousness and messy imperfection of it. There was a kind of originality and a " do - it - yourself " spirit (and one that wasn't packaged, branded, and sold in stores like Urban Outfitters). A lot of fashion today really takes inspiration from these roots. But I find such an authenticity in these images that I rarely see in fashion and personal style today...</div>

A pair of shoes fused with another pair of shoes? Wait, what?! Can those actually be worn either way? I'm still not sure of the answer, but my guess is "yes."<br />

I did some "research" (read: google) Carolin Holzhuber and found that that the Vienna and London-based designer "takes something that normally creates aversions and transforms it into aesthetical objects" according to <a href="http://www.notjustalabel.com/">notjustalabel.com</a>, a website that supports "pioneers in contemporary fashion." If you haven't ever explored this site, I strongly suggest you check it out. It's a wealth of information and a great gateway to discover emerging talent.<br />

These pieces remind me of another favorite Surrealist/Dadaist artist and sculptor, Meret Oppenheim. The artist presents with un-usable, impossible objects full of internal contradictions. Many of her works incorporate found objects wrapped, bound, or fused with conflicting materials.<br />

The concept of blurring the line between style and art is very dear to my heart. I love when things are out of balance, exaggerated, and cause you to look twice. Carolin Holzhuber takes her inspiration from "mirroring, reflection, and conjoined twins." It is quietly in-your-face, subtle yet powerful, and can't be ignored.<br />

Spring/summer is a perfect time for showcasing your favorite pieces of jewelry. The bulkiness of gloves, scarves, piles of fabric, coats isn't there to impede your multi-chain necklace or cause your rings and bracelets to fall off when removing a glove. Spring/summer clothes are more basic, with thinner fabrics and simpler cuts...what better way to add interest to a look?<br />
<br />
I thought I'd share some of my recent favorites with you...<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.tessametcalfe.co.uk/">UK based Tessa Metcalfe's </a>post-apocalypitic-inspired pigeon claw rings were just something that when I saw them, I knew I had to have one. She also does necklaces, earrings, and bespoke engagement pieces with a variety of stones. My only complaint is that every time she creates something new, I want it. Everything she makes is so well-crafted. Also, she has an amazing Instagram account which I highly recommend everyone follow! Snap up a piece by this designer asap, as her work is growing in popularity!<br />

Gabriel Urist has a showroom in a neighborhood where I used to to live, and that is near and dear to my heart, Fort Greene, Brooklyn. If you've ever been there, it is a really cool mix of artists, designers, musicians, teachers, dog-lovers, and creative people of all types. I like that his style is a mix of pop and classic designs, there is almost something baroque about some of the lettering styles and pieces...(all images below, <a href="http://gabrieluristjewelry.com/">http://gabrieluristjewelry.com</a>) Also there's an emphasis on the handcrafted, personal touch. I really like the bold calligraphy and the positive yet in-your-face feeling the pieces have.<br />
<br />

Wendy Brandes is another NYC designer who just makes everything cool. She creates pieces at a variety of price points. Loving her funny emoticon earrings and rings, as well as her "single" earrings in sterling silver that can be mixed and matched. Also the statement initial pieces are stunning, and very funny. If you've read my blog you know I love style that has a sense of humor and whimsy, which a lot of her pieces tend to have. (all photos below, <a href="http://wendybrandes.com/">http://wendybrandes.com</a>) They are also not for the faint at heart, bold, statement pieces that speak for themselves!<br />

One of my most recent purchases was from Portugese designer<a href="http://boticca.com/finger-rings-hand-jewelry-by-carolina-curado/introduction/"> Carolina Curado</a>. I absolutely fell for her worn-under-the-finger "fingernail" midi ring, I've never seen anything like it. I'm also totally in love with her ear cuffs....so unique and beautifully crafted.<br />

I also have a collection of plain bands that I wear as "midi" or "above the knuckle" rings. I picked them up there and there, but mostly at arts fairs, flea markets, and craft fairs. I just buy the smallest sizes they have and wear them on whatever finger they fit. They're great compliments with the larger pieces or just on their own. All photos are by me unless otherwise noted. <br />

If you don't know what it's about, I'd like to introduce you to the "Slow Fashion" movement, and along with that, to <a href="http://threadwrittentextiles.com/">ThreadWritten Textiles</a>, an accessories and home-decor company based in Oakland, California.<br />

Owner, Designer and Creative Director Sarah Pedlow is putting emphasis not only on the handmade product, but the faces of the women artisans behind it. I caught up with Sarah in this interview, where we opened up a dialogue about fashion, heritage, and preservation in a discussion about her company's process and projects.<br />

Q: <b>I read on your blog that you were inspired to start ThreadWritten during your travels in eastern Europe. What drew you to that area specifically?</b><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">A: When I studied abroad in college, Budapest, "the Paris of Central Europe", was on my list of travel destinations. Unfortunately, I didn't make it there. Years later, while thinking about applying for another artist residency, I stumbled upon the Hungarian Multicultural Center residency. Through the residency, I was able to spend a month exploring and falling in love with the city. I started <a href="http://www.sarahpedlow.com/budapest/">photographing a series of street scenes</a> with </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">hand-stitched patterns. My visit to the Ethnographic Museum changed the way I felt about textiles. I couldn't stop thinking about the ornate costumes and the embroidery work. I also love the mix of aesthetics in cities with a Communist history.</span></span><br />
<br />
Q:<b> Can you explain a little more about "slow fashion"?</b><br />
<br />
A: The Slow Fashion movement developed in 2007, based on the principles of the Slow Food movement. Its basic tenets are quality over quantity, preferring sustainable, eco-friendly materials and ethical practices, a high level of craftsmanship and experienced labor, with an emphasis on educating consumers. Making a purchase is an investment in the product and the people making it. Slow Fashion is about the hand-made piece that, while fashionable, is timeless.<br />
<br />
Q:<b> I think it's great that you put faces and names to the women behind the work. How did they feel about that? </b><br />
<br />
A: Meeting the women and getting to know them is one of the best parts of what I do. Many were happy to share their names and photos while a few preferred to remain anonymous. I'm so glad the anonymous women agreed to be photographed, without being identified, and share a little about their lives and their sewing. I love carrying my bag, remembering the woman who spent hours embroidering it with care.<br />

<br />
<br />
Q: <b>I was so impressed with the lace and embroidery work I saw on your blog. About how long does it take to make one of these pieces?</b><br />
<br />
A: Most pieces take several hours up to a few days broken up with time spent preparing meals, tending to family and home, and for some, their animals and gardens.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg88BWyVBUPgaNe0xlHPF4yboyy7KKoQR_gsTBhjkNMf4iTuadb0ZFk86Hgm_djJkB7J7nz-I9icZCT_b2LslZx3MDohgizfZWcYrz0a_-07tNk05gDPpI8WgdDkAIwqemy_R-k-zxcvvY/s1600/Pillow2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg88BWyVBUPgaNe0xlHPF4yboyy7KKoQR_gsTBhjkNMf4iTuadb0ZFk86Hgm_djJkB7J7nz-I9icZCT_b2LslZx3MDohgizfZWcYrz0a_-07tNk05gDPpI8WgdDkAIwqemy_R-k-zxcvvY/s1600/Pillow2.jpg" height="640" width="412" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Q: <b>Is there still a strong emphasis on teaching this craft today?</b><br />
<br />
A: Fewer and fewer women practice the <i><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">Kalotaszeg</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"> </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">írásos</span></i><b> </b>style of embroidery. Orsolya, a woman in her 30s, who translates for me, learned to embroider in grade school, but sewing is no longer part of the curriculum. Women who used to teach their daughters and granddaughters no longer do. I was surprised at how difficult it was to find this style of embroidery when I first traveled to Transylvania in 2012. The churches hold beautiful tapestries that commemorate events or were made as gifts to the pastors, but otherwise it is hard to find them outside of museum collections. Most women I met practice less labor-intensive forms of embroidery if they are doing any handiwork at all. <br />
<br />
Q: <b>You seem to join art, fashion, and travel seamlessly! (pun intended). Do you have any tips or advice for a young, creative enterpreneur?</b><br />
<br />
A: It's all about making connections and finding a thread between ideas, visual elements, patterns and places. Don't be afraid to start putting out feelers. Do your research, and take a leap (ideally in that order)!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQbd80PbvTU-gLEpYiOZDim2TP7w9_foP2Y4PyB_4ANEPUtv1bsFScqCqoNLB9nwMSYddTqBsWmbCHznZydeEKWHbyvrIcOdQPmeflrqDhm1tAF2UcHvhBH1VKi1r8b4BUaWuurkjp5iY/s1600/MetroBudaResized.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQbd80PbvTU-gLEpYiOZDim2TP7w9_foP2Y4PyB_4ANEPUtv1bsFScqCqoNLB9nwMSYddTqBsWmbCHznZydeEKWHbyvrIcOdQPmeflrqDhm1tAF2UcHvhBH1VKi1r8b4BUaWuurkjp5iY/s1600/MetroBudaResized.jpg" height="507" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Q: <b>What's the most inspiring part of ThreadWritten?</b><br />
<br />
A: As Sara Meaker, who has been coordinating work in the Kalotaszeg region, said to me last October, "Everything, all one's experience and knowledge, build upon each other, enriching each other." I've created a business where I combine my art, design, and travel experience, along with service. Learning about culture and connecting with people to make something together is a joy and a blessing. Getting to know the women and their traditions, and sharing that with others, is the heart of what I do.<br />
<br />
Q:<b> Where we can purchase your pieces?</b><br />
<br />
A: A few of my first bags and phone cases are available <a href="http://threadwritten.bigcartel.com/">here</a>. For those in the San Francisco Bay Area, I'll have a booth at the Hungarian Heritage Festival in Belmont, CA, on May 10.<br />
<br />
Q: <b>What can we look forward to in the future?</b><br />
<br />
A: With the help of Pastor Csilla in Damos, Sara Meaker in Huedin, and Reka Fogarasi, a filmmaker and the owner of <a href="http://www.ideandoda.com/">Ide and Oda</a>, I made a short documentary of two women demonstrating how to stitch <i><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">írásos.</span></i> They will keep the video as a record of the style, and are already using it as a teaching tool to help others learn the different stitches. I hope that ThreadWritten will motivate more women to learn or re-learn the technique.<br />
<br />
Two small, limited edition pillows will soon be available on my site. I'm currently designing a more formal structured tote and clutch. You can follow me here: <a href="http://facebook.com/ThreadWritten">facebook.com/ThreadWritten</a>, for details. I'm also @ThreadWritten on Instagram, and at <a href="http://pinterest.com/sarahpedlow">pinterest.com/sarahpedlow</a>.<br />

<br />
First up:<br />
<br />
This shirt by R13. You can get it at sites like Net-A-Porter and LaGarconne. <a href="http://www.net-a-porter.com/Shop/Designers/R13/All?level3Filter=&pn=1&npp=60&image_view=product&dScroll=0">I pretty much love everything R13 makes</a>, but this one reminds me of zines and drawings my friends and I used to make on the backs of our notebooks in high school. It's a cashmere and cotton blend, and it costs $195.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWw2hx6v0z_uKXqbAo9uPljfC6BHMto7qX2FOu0fZxZ55opQWfYGvLWH3hFWWThmY4AthF1FAmA9pKU6-x9e7zqnBK1e1IS_jeNFqfSCTZhSNuVEpZkIYCv-NyEF3dZo8n8h7_DpxtWmo/s1600/Screen+Shot+2014-04-13+at+6.33.14+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWw2hx6v0z_uKXqbAo9uPljfC6BHMto7qX2FOu0fZxZ55opQWfYGvLWH3hFWWThmY4AthF1FAmA9pKU6-x9e7zqnBK1e1IS_jeNFqfSCTZhSNuVEpZkIYCv-NyEF3dZo8n8h7_DpxtWmo/s1600/Screen+Shot+2014-04-13+at+6.33.14+PM.png" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">image, net-a-porter.com</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I'm thinking I'd style this with some baggy plaid trousers, and a fitted leather jacket, maybe tuck the pants into the tops of some chunky heeled platform boots.<br />
<br />
Next up, a classic. I've wanted one of these Moschino logo belts for a long time and this may be the year to finally save up and get one. They've been around since the 80s-90s, and have recently been seen on "celebrities" yet again. Just a simple way to really give any outfit that always-needed touch of badass. Moschino has a lot of different styles, sayings and colors on <a href="http://www.moschino.com/us/women/belts">their website</a>, but I prefer this classic black one with gold letters. ($295)<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">image, moschino.com</td></tr>

<br />
Since were on the logo kick, I'm living for this incredible necklace, with "mantra" motto, from I STILL LOVE YOU NYC, and available at <a href="http://internationalplayground.com/">internationalplayground.com. </a> I found out about this site a while back, forgot about it, then rediscovered it (love it when that happens) ;) also, this piece is handmade in New York, which I think is awesome. There's also a smaller "candy" colored version, and different sayings. This XL one is $75.<br />

This post could probably have something from<a href="http://www.acnestudios.com/"> Swedish designer ACNE</a> on it every time, like R13 they can do no wrong in my eyes. Amazing balance of a rock / grunge, humor and high fashion. I'm including 3 of my fave pieces here...<br />

I mean, how awesome is that hard case clutch($1000)? ._. I'm kind of a whore for accessories, I suppose, but the slashed jacket ($3000) and bondage sandal ($670) ? Works of art. What I like about all these pieces is that they are bold, but still very wearable and add instant sass and irony to an outfit (if both those things are possible at once.) Also, I seem to be leaning toward a very neutral palette for s/s '14. I have to say I'm not feeling pastels or the crazy florals that I'm seeing on a lot of the interwebz. How will I translate these ideas to my everyday look? I'll be posting about that in the next upcoming months...stay tuned and as always thanks for reading xehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15068811291643254435noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6525521635762493036.post-12035351866884230682014-01-05T08:20:00.000-08:002014-01-05T08:20:54.262-08:002013 wrap up & looking forward "Resolutions"So, this post is a few days late. I couldn't think of anything to say on New Year's Eve, and my plans for New Year's changed at the last moment, so I don't have any amazing outfits to post ;) To be honest, 2013 was more than a little difficult for me. And, over the holidays, I felt a strong desire to just "be" in the moment, rather than thinking "I need to post this on Instagram/Twitter/my blog/AsosFashionFinder" whatever. It was nice to not have to frame my life within the limitations of social media. It's so refreshing to just STOP, feel the cold winter air, smile at the person next to you, and enjoy dinner or coffee without posting it to a photo-sharing site.<br />
<br />

And I have to say, while I love it, I'm quite tired of being addicted to my iPhone. One of my resolutions is to stop wasting time on the Internet and Interwebz, and start getting down to business. I'm very good at tricking myself into thinking that I am "busy," when in fact I am just procrastinating and wasting time. It's so easy these days, with an entire world available to me via my computer. <br />
<br />
Two of my biggest accomplishments this year were:<br />
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/SharpLilTeeth">getting my Etsy shop up and running</a></li>
</ul>
<br />
<ul>
<li>learning to <a href="http://crochet.about.com/od/learntocrochet/tp/crochet-for-beginners.htm">crochet</a>, and making a lot of scarves and some afghans for charity, and also for family and friends at Christmastime.</li>
</ul>

2014 is going to be my "get SH*T DONE" year. It's my year of finally getting my personal photography website up and live, actually making a capsule collection of clothing, instead of just talking about it, writing and drawing more, learning new software, being more active and wearing more color. My big "spiritual" goal is to be more compassionate, more heart-centered, and more accepting of myself and others. You read it here first. Now I've committed to it in writing! I'll have to check back next year and see if I was able to accomplish these things... ;)<br />
<br />
I'll spare you the graphic details, but it was indeed a year of ups and downs, I was dealing with a lot of issues: from illness, to crippling anxiety and depression, financial woes...the usual culprits. But it was also a year of fresh starts, healing, centering, sorting things out, and sharpening focus.<br />

That being said, I'm going to be taking a little break from blogging & social media for a while. No reason in particular, just need to focus inward and get back into doing some hands-on activities, and maybe "detox" a little from technology. It's a time for introspection, self-healing and peace. A new beginning, with infinite possibilities.ehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15068811291643254435noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6525521635762493036.post-54474035299858235602013-12-17T08:35:00.000-08:002013-12-17T08:35:39.568-08:00DIY fashion box - Collage/Decoupage.So, I finally finished a DIY that I feel comfortable sharing with the Interwebz.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I made this box for my good friend for Christmas, and placed some goodies inside...it was an old wooden cigar box I found at an antique shop and decided to cover it over with some images from this past year in fashion. I just tore up or cut up a bunch of old fashion magazines, and kept it black and white to keep things a little more visually striking.</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I love collage because it's very "user friendly", non-toxic, and usually yields a stunning result, even if you don't have a lot of artistic aptitude...just a cool way to personalize a gift.<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decoupage"> Decoupage is a pretty ancient technique</a> with a fascinating history. The surrealists liked to play around with this too...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
To make something like this, you'll need :</div>
<div>
1) a wooden, cardboard, or paper box</div>
<div>
2) <a href="http://www.plaidonline.com/mod-podge/brand/home.htm">Mod Podge</a> (a kind of glue/sealer/sticky thing) and clear<a href="http://www.walmart.com/ip/Mod-Podge-Clear-Matte-Acrylic-Sealer-12-oz/17300139"> Acrylic sealing spray</a></div>
<div>
3) old magazines, old papers, gift wrap, candy wrappers, old letters or whatever you want to use for decorating your box</div>
<div>
4) a cheap paintbrush or one of those spongy paintbrushes for applying the glue/Mod Podge</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
tips: </div>
<div>
-I coat both sides of the image before applying it to the box, with a thin layer of the Mod Podge ~ (then I use the paintbrush to coat the whole box with Mod Podge after I finish my design)</div>
<div>
-I sometimes tear the pages/images instead of cutting with scissors for a more organic interesting texture </div>
<div>
-I use an old credit card/library card to gently smooth down the applied paper pieces, working from the center of the image out.</div>
<div>
-After you're finished, let the box dry completely (it dries pretty fast tho I waited overnight), then spray apply the clear acrylic sealant to the entire box (I worked outside on a piece of newspaper with this, as it gets pretty smelly/sticky - also helps to hold the can of spray about 10-12 inches away from the box and let it fall over it like a "mist" using quick short bursts of spray)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Let me know what you think! And if you decide to do your own box, leave me a link in the comments, and as always, thank you for reading x</div>

<br /></div>
<br />
<br />
A lot of people were upset when Hedi Slimane became the CD of YSL, and dropped the "Yves"... I wasn't sure what to expect at first but I have to say I think this is one of the most exciting pairings of new vision with a dyed-in-the-wool fashion house staple...I absolutely love what he's doing at Saint Laurent and also his photography...ehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15068811291643254435noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6525521635762493036.post-68936252923405848972013-11-21T07:43:00.000-08:002018-04-11T08:03:41.090-07:00fab fashionistas. I recently had the pleasure of viewing this documentary film on women with style (with an average age of 80!). My dear friend sent me the link, and immediately, I was hooked. Not only was it about style, but about life, and living in general. I'm sharing it here because I found it to be one of the most meaningful pieces on personal style I've seen in a long time.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pb1YI2CKSyo">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pb1YI2CKSyo</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
Some of my favorite women in fashion are older women...I hesitate to even say "older" women, because it's just a made-up category created by a very narrow view of what is culturally acceptable here in this youth obsessed country I live in. For most of my life, I've always felt "older" anyway...so maybe I identify more with these women on a spiritual and personal level.<br />
<br />
I think it's very interesting in the video what the Vogue editor says about the magazine being a fantasy/dream world for its readers. It's for this very reason that I find Vogue/fashion magazines in general EXTREMELY BORING. I am so thankful for the vast and unique community of fashion bloggers of all shapes, styles, and ages that are out there on the 'Net today. I hardly ever read magazines for style inspiration any more thanks to this community! I've always more inspired by personal expression, artistry, and street style and less by "Fashion"...it's far more interesting to ME to look at what people are wearing in real life, than at the glossy pages of something manufactured and unattainable. <br />
<br />
Photoshop is so commonplace in fashion these days. Every blemish and flaw can be "fixed" now with post-production. In all honesty, it isn't even really showing actual models...just digital illustrations. In fact I feel like the whole cosmetic surgery and botox movement is a reaction to try to become one of these digital illustrations in real life. I'm always surprised by how many people have boob jobs, lipo, botox, and fillers, it's so commonplace these days, just like buying a new blouse or a pair of jeans!<br />

<br />
I know there are already a lot of blogs that deal with this topic, but I just had to write my own take on it. I was so inspired by how intelligent, vivacious, and active these women are. In fact they are more fearless and with it than many young people I know personally!<br />
<br />
<br />It's so refreshing to see women who are putting themselves out there to battle ageism, sexism, and culturally accepted norms...and doing it with grace, style, uniqueness, and class.<br />
<br />
What do you think? I'd love to hear your comments and as always, thanks for reading xxx<br />

I strongly dislike the word "STYLIST." It kind of surprises me that people need to pay someone to have "taste" for them, or to tell them what labels to wear or what looks good on them. I'm of the camp "if it makes you happy and you feel good in it, wear it."<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I love fashion, current styles and trends, but alternately I feel like true style has to come from somewhere within your heart, it's not about buying something just because someone told you it's hot, or wearing head-to-toe designer labels, in fact, this is really boring and safe. Yep, I too would love to splurge on some designer pieces from Saint Laruent, or Givenchy this season, but I realize that solely wearing designer stuff isn't going to give me style...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I come from a background of the visual and performing arts, and I've always approached my personal style more like this: </div>
<div>
"how do these shapes/colors/textures work together?" </div>
<div>
"can i get away with wearing this to the post office and the grocery store?" ("if not, who cares!")</div>
<div>
"does this make me look scary/crazy/off/wild/original?" ("if so, GREAT!!!") </div>
<div>
"can I wear this dog collar as a necklace/bracelet/boot harness?"</div>
<div>
and</div>
<div>
"this is so bad, it's good!"</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I look to the past for my own style inspiration. I often find it on vintage vinyl album covers, like this Sonny&Cher I found recently while thrift shopping:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihyphenhyphen-Rjafzy4qRunLm0Ykm-ZBGszNi8JtrIUE3mpxQcWMYhkeMVuUWNrbdUnxpUnktDfd5tWqreh9ZykjRmR-YfNM-Wjp87wX77_sCHnhk4PpGeNp0jBcmM95cnmlOHJOhS5OOnH-LXIWs/s1600/photo+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihyphenhyphen-Rjafzy4qRunLm0Ykm-ZBGszNi8JtrIUE3mpxQcWMYhkeMVuUWNrbdUnxpUnktDfd5tWqreh9ZykjRmR-YfNM-Wjp87wX77_sCHnhk4PpGeNp0jBcmM95cnmlOHJOhS5OOnH-LXIWs/s640/photo+1.JPG" width="638" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I mean, look at them! Those jeans! That dress! and I love how casual and un-forced the photographs look, like their style just arrived naturally out of their surroundings and what they were doing at the time. It isn't forced, it isn't practiced...it's just kind of who they were. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_Q57VSIwKeiEs3INRBu0mnHKjJZEWHCwPOHVPxS0wHD_JfWg-yIhkQObk_ci5TxX-b_nfiqyt8NJa8IVtIVve8MNqqbUFq70fT5ES_t3sJgLvLPZGYHeIZ8e9zXwrEvpeFwoWbffqQSU/s1600/photo+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="630" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_Q57VSIwKeiEs3INRBu0mnHKjJZEWHCwPOHVPxS0wHD_JfWg-yIhkQObk_ci5TxX-b_nfiqyt8NJa8IVtIVve8MNqqbUFq70fT5ES_t3sJgLvLPZGYHeIZ8e9zXwrEvpeFwoWbffqQSU/s640/photo+2.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I feel like this individuality and fearlessness with style is sort of missing from a lot of our popular culture. </div>
<div>
So, here are my general style tips to everyone:</div>
<div>
#1 <b>DON'T BE AFRAID TO</b></div>
<div>
a) mess up</div>
<div>
b) look ridiculous</div>
<div>
c) have a sense of humor</div>
<div>
d) laugh at yourself</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
#2 <b>OPEN YOUR HEART</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
#3 <b>FIND WHAT INSPIRES YOU</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
#4 <b>BE ADVENTUROUS</b> (shop in the thrift store, as well as the mall, cut up your clothes, try to make some clothes or alter stuff you already have!)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
#5 <b>STOP LOOKING AT STYLE / BEAUTY BLOGS AND COMPARING YOURSELF TO HOW SKINNY, PRETTY, HAPPY, WHATEVER the other people on the blogs may appear...it's all a facade anyway. ;)</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
AND ABOVE ALL </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
#5 <b>SUSPEND JUDGEMENT</b> (of yourself and OTHERS!)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you can do that, I think that's the basis of developing your own personal style! (and generally having an easier time getting dressed in the morning).</div>
<div>

<br />
however, i didn't feel so bad about it after my amazing friend forwarded me <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/newsgraphics/2013/09/13/fashion-week-editors-picks/?smid=fb-nytimes&WT.z_sma=ST_FWE_20130913">this link</a><br />
<br />
it's an incredible resource, where you can see all of the spring 2014 Ready-To-Wear collections at a glance. i was following on twitter and instagram, so i saw a lot of the front row looks as they were coming down the runway in real time. i liked so many of the new collections, for many different reasons.<br />
<br />
from a design and structure standpoint, Altuzarra and Yigal Azourel were amazing. i loved the textures and fabrics at Proenza Schouler...Thom Browne and Rodarte both stood out to me just as pure visual enjoyment...and Band of Outsiders and Y-3 are always perennial favorites of mine. <br />
<br />
what designers are your favorites? let me know and as always thanks for reading x<br />

<br />
I AM NOT A MODEL. (i'm a BLOGGER. i do this, all by myself, in my tiny bedroom. it is not glamorous. i don't get invited to fashion shows. i buy my clothes in thrift stores. i'm a big fan of wearing the same thing every day.)<br />
<br />
kind of difficult when you have a "style blog". i haven't been blogging recently because i'm not sure at all what direction i want my blog to take. i tried to do the "i look cute and amazing in my outfit" shots, and that's just not me. at all. please, don't get me wrong...i love a lot of the other fashion blogs with outfit posts, their amazing photography...i just don't feel like that's something i'm comfortable with yet.<br />
<br />
i've been kind of frustrated with the fashion blogging thing lately, if it wasn't obvious.<br />
<br />
i've been more into my nail polish blog, which you can find<a href="http://sharplilnails.blogspot.com/"> here</a>. i started posting nail stuff here as drafts, and then it took on a life of its own, so i gave it its own blog. let me know what you think, and please follow, if you're into that sort of thing :) <br />
<br />
i will go back to posting content on SharpLilTeeth, when i at least have a clearer idea of what i'm doing. a friend and i were talking not too long ago and she challenged me to do one post a week, at least, even if i didn't feel like it. i'm thinking of taking her up on that, and trying to get over my creative block.<br />
<br />
thanks for sticking with me...i promise i will come out of hiding. xo<br />

i've been wanting to do a shredded t-DIY for a while now. i found there was something REALLY satisfying about shredding this top. it's highly addictive and fun to un-ravel something that's already been machine-knit. i did most of the shredding on the train/bus. kinda like knitting, only UN-KNITTING. ;)</div>

i found this excellent <a href="http://childhoodflames.blogspot.com/2008/10/do-it-yourself-shredded-tee.html">tutorial</a> from childhood flames. she even includes a video !! so helpful. i found a silver knit top at the salvation army for $1...unfortunately, i don't have a before pic, but it was a form-fitting, long sleeve metallic vintage knit, probably from the 1980s. this is what i transformed it into. wanted to used a metallic knit for a little more texture/visual interest. below i did just a basic style so you can see how it looks on....<br />

love the sleeves! the great thing about this is it gets bigger as you shred it so you can chop off excess fabric if you want once it's unraveled. i did this sleeve thing just before i took these shots. i may cut the sleeves even more and wear it more like a tank dress. let me know what you think! have you ever done this DIY?<br />

to make the winter uniform work for spring, i basically turn the long black coat into a summer dress...i'm working on studding the collar of a vintage blazer i found at the thrift store. denim jackets or boyfriend blazers are pretty easy to find at the thrift shop, and they are perfect for the cooler days. i bought some studded belts at the thrift shop, and took the studs off of them, and now i'm putting them on the blazer's collar....</div>

but check these out too...they are all amazing. i'm lucky to have my 70s vintage pair, but if i were going to make a "wardrobe investment" this spring/summer, it would have to be on one of these amazing pairs of sunglasses. it's an instant statement piece you can wear with anything! (and you'll have it for years to come--this look never goes out of style, imho).</div>

($129 for, pine, not particle board, and it was made in Poland) (spent almost 2.5 hours with my bf putting this bad boy together...so i'm showing it off on my blog ha ha!)<br />

the baby sheepskin...this was REALLY small. a lot smaller than it looked online. but i bought it anyway. i'm hoping to get a bigger one to cover more of the floor, but it's so nice to put your feet on in the morning. apparently IKEA used to sell larger ones but they don't anymore :( very reasonable for the price ($30).<br />

OCC cosmetics lip tar and nail varnish! check out their new <a href="http://www.occmakeup.com/spring2013.html">sci fi lullabies collection for spring 2013 here.</a> they have really great names and great colors!<br />

<br />
i played it safe and bought kava kava (nail polish) and pris (lip tar from sci fi lullabies collection.) all of their products are amazing, but after sampling a lot of the colors i was lusting after online, they just looked terrible on me in person. i feel everything they make would ROCK on tan-to-darker skinned gals...so...yeah......i am just a pale white chick and i will now be even paler with my almond glitter nails and lips (zombie chic!??!) my friend talked me out of getting the red eyeshadow, but i may eventually go back for it he he he.<br />

<br />
this is really easy, i got an old gap denim shirt at the thrift store for a dollar, cut the collar off with fabric scissors, dipped the whole thing in bleach for an hour or two, and then punched the spikes through using a small manicure scissor to make the hole! the spikes are riveted, they're very easy to attach...this whole thing took me maybe an hour at most.<br />

<br /></div>
the collar is a making a major statement--worn as necklace or part of a shirt, many of the collars are detachable (i see a d.i.y. in the future-maybe a deconstructed denim collar with studs!)...love the idea of wearing a contrasting black or white collar with a colorful shirt! Just having the collar also adds layers without adding bulk...i've seen them also as necklaces too, with studs, spikes, part of ombre-dipped pieces...such a great accessory, a little different and more subtle than wearing a big necklace! <br />

update: just got a text from my friend who told me about<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://brown.edu/Facilities/Haffenreffer/IcelandicClothing.htm">this beautiful wool and velvet icelandic collar</a> </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
she saw recently. </div>
the collar, which was made in AD 1600-1700 (can you believe it, looks so recent), has a "secret worn close to the heart", in the form of love letters that were folded into the garment while it was being made...i absolutely love this idea of making clothing personal and meaningful, a one-of-a-kind piece that has deep meaning for the one who wears it. it's a whole different way of looking at clothes. our culture is so disposable today, and often i find myself caught in this same trap-getting excited about a style bargain on mass-produced, impersonal items at stores like h&m and F21!<br />
<br />
if i ever get up the energy to start making my own accessories, and clothing, it's this kind of energy i want my garments to have--<br />

(haircut anxiety)i haven't had BANGS since i was in 6th grade. and it was not a good experience. i've never opted to try them again, but lately i have been collecting "hairstyle" ideas like these, for when i go back to the salon...<br />
<br />
i haven't had a haircut in probably close to 3 years, because i am VERY superstitious about who touches my hair. it borders on the insane...it's like i have to have a spiritual/personal connection with whoever does it. soon, though, i'm probably going to be forced to do something.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj20CvZt5WEbP03Ww02MleAl-z3MBq7jGzwlsmdMBQHIRxRMXcl_XLs5dLG5bBmCWpxi0SBMiCCqFYK9a50yDPuOC6iL6TFB6gXQp7L_grR7uZ150b3vbk4gXQBx9pOXO3ZwA0M2votnSo/s1600/jacket1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj20CvZt5WEbP03Ww02MleAl-z3MBq7jGzwlsmdMBQHIRxRMXcl_XLs5dLG5bBmCWpxi0SBMiCCqFYK9a50yDPuOC6iL6TFB6gXQp7L_grR7uZ150b3vbk4gXQBx9pOXO3ZwA0M2votnSo/s640/jacket1.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
here's what you will need<br />
<br />
1 a jean jacket or vest<br />
(this one is from salvation army, and cost maybe $3-4 don't buy something expensive, there is absolutely no reason to)<br />
<br />
2 studs. i picked mine up at <a href="http://www.mjtrim.com/">m&j trimming</a> in new york. (they have great products...SO easy to overspend here) but you can find 'em online too. try <a href="http://studsandspikes.com/">here</a>.<br />
<br />
3 a knife or nail file to bend the spikes down once they are pushed through the fabric<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF2y_tMd1i_JHFRhMkFDERKd07zVxiGxW7t69TvYxXhZRoDVSmD7rA4VkqEtO1lJiF9KPSyGWzJhV7ZrZV6J24Zc6-2emwmxYsbTUnsj5e7kyjFZyR92mMrqgCw-ul3m_XzURULR9-YNs/s1600/jacket7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF2y_tMd1i_JHFRhMkFDERKd07zVxiGxW7t69TvYxXhZRoDVSmD7rA4VkqEtO1lJiF9KPSyGWzJhV7ZrZV6J24Zc6-2emwmxYsbTUnsj5e7kyjFZyR92mMrqgCw-ul3m_XzURULR9-YNs/s640/jacket7.jpg" style="cursor: move;" unselectable="on" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">the materials. i used "colonial gold" pyramid studs, which i bought at m&j trimming in nyc. a nail file, or a knife, to push the studs down, and a vintage jean jacket <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilHlWp8GnYopXiHsHC7SRv_PcBeWNiwNRy6bGdbULfQVx1otqlaqHrjs6DiQ2h9AGjhiwyUtxC6ew9mW8Yxo7CGdr97t4cobQh5eLrtoufomUs-zEc6pEi0915aF8CpTY0ZHppy3yUrJk/s1600/jacket4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilHlWp8GnYopXiHsHC7SRv_PcBeWNiwNRy6bGdbULfQVx1otqlaqHrjs6DiQ2h9AGjhiwyUtxC6ew9mW8Yxo7CGdr97t4cobQh5eLrtoufomUs-zEc6pEi0915aF8CpTY0ZHppy3yUrJk/s640/jacket4.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
i line the studs up before i push them in. it's easier to make a pattern first before you go through all the trouble and then decide you don't like it. also, i line up the two on the the end of the row first before placing the middle one. much easier.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF9eLSwPyi_FxwMoFs-PmLaeaXxtNRlBo2xYOtbto68LrL8KzzqmAAJoXNafhUK0fSkfMn471GDuz7DoKTy-Umc-gtJj5_us5Y3DoauBviKfa-ntOPCz7JKtEQgwF0sVRzdNH4C4cJzvw/s1600/jacket3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF9eLSwPyi_FxwMoFs-PmLaeaXxtNRlBo2xYOtbto68LrL8KzzqmAAJoXNafhUK0fSkfMn471GDuz7DoKTy-Umc-gtJj5_us5Y3DoauBviKfa-ntOPCz7JKtEQgwF0sVRzdNH4C4cJzvw/s640/jacket3.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
i only bend one little arm of the studs down while i'm attaching them. this holds them in place so i can check placement before pushing them all into position with the file/knife. that way i can make sure they are where i want them before committing...again much easier if some need to be moved or adjusted slightly.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

viola! the finished project! denim is a little tough to stud, especially with the pyramid pieces. they start to hurt your fingers after a while. really easy though! just takes a little time and patience.<br />

anne rice was my generation's stephaine meyer. and i read lj smith's "the vampire diaries" as soon as it was published in the 90s....ten (gasp_) years later i've moved on. kinda already over emo, darkness, depression, and vampires vampires and more vampires. <br />
<br />
still, i guess i'm somewhat of a goth girl at heart. my "grown up style" is nowhere near my 15 y/o theatrics, but i always go for black, chains and spikes instead of pastels, neon, florals... now i'll do something like this. black half-moons and finger armor (rings, from h&m, $7.95 for 3) to honor my gothic heritage...<br />
